I don't know how you guys put so rude rating on some good animes, I can't seem to be able to give a bad rating on anything I've watched. All the animes in my list are worth the rating I put for me... Is there something I miss ? Am I too kind or something ?

Like, do you really take the art and sound into count when you rate an anime or the story is more important ? I'd like to know how you guys do it !

Haha, 10 on everything ?
But a lot of people here seem to think that a mean score over 7 means that you're too kind to the mangas

I would say a lot of people seem to think a 7 is average. 5 is an average score

So if you were to rate every anime in existence your mean score should be 5, because it's the average score

Hmm, but the average manga is good to me, and 6 is just "fine", that's why I would put 7 as the middle

I don't think it's about taste, I think it's about what you take into count when you rate. Should you compare this manga to the others of it's genre before rating it ? Or just give it a good rate because it's good ? dunno.

I recommend you rating bases on your enjoyment.

But if you were to review an anime or manga, you should consider every aspect of the anime/manga, Like sound, soundtrack, quality, plot, Plot, characters and so on...

Rating is subjective... everyone follows a different criteria whenever they rate an anime.

My own ratings for example are mostly 7-9... and I usually just give a 10 to all my favorite animes even if I know it's not perfect.

The solution to this is to lower your score for an average anime. If you set your score for average anime as a 7 then anime that you thought were pretty decent would automatically get at least an 8, which means you don't have much room to distinguish high quality anime and you also end up with a high mean score. I have my average set at 5 and my mean for full length TV series is 6.3. My actual mean is lower than that because of shorts, but I don't advise doing that. Eventually you'll start to associate quality with your new system and may even consider a 7 to be a generous score rather than a poor one.

If you rate on enjoyment, rate on enjoyment. If you find most anime and manga fairly good, then rate it what you want.

I'm generally a really critical, cynical person, which transcends into my ratings. However, because of the way I rate, anime that I liked may even be rated a 4. If I was rating solely on enjoyment, it would probably be a 6.

I could go on and on about rating (exceptions, what things you hold of most importance in an anime, etc.) but it doesn't matter in the long run.

Pretty much: dude don't worry about your ratings. they're there for you to access. dont care about how other people rate.

yea I was pretty surprised by some of the ratings in your list :p
I understand how the system works now, thanks guys ! I thought the way you write should follow standards, but I guess it's completly subjective :)

I can understand if you'd need them to decide whether to watch something or not.. (if you care about what other people think of something)

But it's all opinions of peoples tastes.

Well actually no, depending on how you set your rating scale different numbers can be the average score. For example I use a 5 star rating scale which I scale up by 2, in which case 6 would be average and 5 would be below average at 2.5. If god forbid you used a lower scale than 5 you could get an average number of 7 when you scale up.

Yes that's why I think it would be better if everyone followed standards. It's a bit rude, but it would be easier when you don't know which to choose between 3-4 animes for the next one to watch

I feel like I am a very lenient rater. If I finish the anime but it was pretty boring, I'd still give it a 7. If I genuinely didn't like the anime, I would've dropped it already. With that being said, I have dropped animes I've rated as 7+ because they started off great but went downhill.

I didn't used to be so mean, I used to give everything above a 6 or 7. Then the bitterness kicked in, and my abhorrence for the shit I've dropped consumed me, as well as my irritance with many of my finished anime that in hindsight really weren't worth a 9-10. My mean for my finished is relatively average as far as MAL goes, a 6.9, maybe lower now that I've changed some, and my dropped list is around a 2.9 mean.

Art yes. It usually makes or breaks the anime for me which is why I don't bother with anime that is before 2000......well there have been a few exceptions. but yeah the story and characters are also what I take into account. Sound.....not so much.

I just go with gut reaction, with 5 being the standard, 1 being the worst, 10 being perfect

I rated Dragon Ball Z 5 not because it's bad per se, but because it's the most standard of anime, I think

just because most people watch something they didn't like doesn't mean u do as well, a user that has a larger amount of series consumed is likely to have a lower mean score than somebody who only got into the medium recently, why? Because most new people that just got into the medium starts with consuming series that are deemed good or enjoyable, it's not often that a user would look at the medium negatively when they just got into it.

If a story is offensively bad then I'll strongly dislike it. I can forgive technical aspects if it's thematically interesting, but the reverse scenario is definitely unpleasant to experience.
Now you're wondering if there's white text in any of my other posts.

3 = I'd rather browse CD = dropped
1 = no artistic merit, I'm dual screening that shit if it's longer than 3 mins = dropped
4 = okay, but there's some stuff that annoyed me about it, not bad though
5 = I liked it to some degree but no lasting impact
6 = good
9 = I will rave about it
10 = I was so absorbed that I lost track of reality and will probably immediately rewatch.

Yeah, something like that

I don't really think of anime in separate categories, they aren't even really distinct, it's more or less how I feel about it as a whole, not really any criteria.

But yes, I am very capable of disliking shows, I dislike most things from most mediums, anime being the most enjoyable on average for me.

No such thing as rating too highly. You can rate any anime however you wish and so do everyone else. If you don't find anything bad at the moment, then good for you! :)
Everyone has different inclinations and standards that they would like to find in an anime and this definitely has a huge connection to personal tastes and preferences too.

One of the reasons why I prefer my scale is because it lets me rate anime higher than my average without making it seem like I'm rating them too high. I would feel weird giving anime like Ghost Stories and Sore ga Seiyu the rating of a perfect 10, but in my scale an 8 pretty much is a 10. I can express my true feelings about the anime I watch without feeling bad about rating them too high.

Well since this is mal, I go with the mal rating system which is pretty straightforward: if you liked it, it's more than 5, if you didn't like it, it's less than 5.

Well yes, of course. Anime is a visual and audio medium. It is what sets it apart from novels and manga, for the former and latter. Why wouldn't you take them into account? They're what we watch this medium for, after all.

I don't see the point in giving "kind" ratings. If something is bad, poor, mediocre, etc, then I'll rate it as such. What reason is there for me to try and be nice? It's my list, and I'll rate it as I please. There's no real effect on anything whether I rate highly or lowly.

That's very interesting, but then I would put 10 to so many shows because I always want to watch them again :D
But if I take an example, let's say Aldnoah Zero, it's not bad but some things annoyed me... I wouldn't see myself put a 4 to it still.

If those ~50 animes are all the animes you've seen then give it time and you will probably become more aware of your taste and raise your bar for a good show.

I didn't put all the animes I've seen, only the last ones (for example yu-gi-oh, dragonball, etc I don't put them because it's my childhood and I don't have enouth memories to rate them properly)

Yeah, those don't really count. My point is that your taste will probably become more complex with time and will become easier to rate some anime lower.

Yep probably, I can see that easily as popular animes like fairy tail get very high ratings that they dont deserve (in my opinion), because a lot of people just come into the website and put 10 to them as they only know 4 or 5 animes. When they know more animes they will most likely review their ratings later on. I guess it's the same for everyone :)
