most people don't like him because he comes off as a whiny, spoiled tool bag who's also an asshole. yeah he's a alright drummer, but in the world of metal he's FAR from the best. i know numerous small time bands with drummers who are far more proficient.
To sum it up in one word: Napster.

I think when they played in Amsterdam earlier in the year it was something like 43 euro. Last year I paid I think 37 for a ticket, but we had the taxes increased on tickets.
Pain is opening for NW in their UK tour next month. Sigh.

Lombardo may be able to play harder and faster but a great drummer writes and plays great 'drum music'...While I love Slayer, in terms of popularity they're not a nat on an elephants ass when compared to Metallica.

Yeah, the Napster controversy is the main reason. That and the fact their music has sucked since "the black album", well excluding "death magnetic" which brought the old sound back! The exit and quick replacement of Jason Newsted left me sour with James Hetfield too. Thought Jason's side project would break up the band, gave him an ultimatum. He is whiny bitch. But I am still a fan OF THE MUSIC. Have been since 84.
Well, no they don't... lol Great albums, but very uneven with the exception of Master of Puppets.
First of all, "hard metal"? Secondly, off the top of my head: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Venom, Kiss, Saxon, Scorpions, Accept, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, AC/DC... They were all well known before Metallica arrived. As it is true that none of them played thrash metal, most of them are heavier than Metallica ever was. It's not all about the speed etc. after all. Slayer are brutal, but many bands that play faster and "more aggressive" just sound pretentious.
What's popularity got to do with this? Lombardo is not playing "harder and faster", he's got the groove in his playing that Ulrich knows nothing about. That's what makes Lombardo a great drummer, not his ability to play fast. Ulrich on the other hand can't keep time, requires multiple takes to play one song through in the studio (and if you've ever seen them live, it's fairly obvious that he can't get through a song without lagging or fucking up with his bass drum) and plays the worst arrangements in the history of metal music. Only on Master of Puppets and the albums before that (to some extent) he sounds ok. It's his luck that he does come up with some great tunes! Otherwise the band would've stopped in the early 1980's.
As for Lambardo being better, I dunno... I would say equal. Besides Kerry King is the biggest asshole on the face of the earth!
Then again, douchebaggery seems to be normal for old school metal artists. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Jeff Becerra of Possessed for example.
As for greatest drummer... Mike Portnoy and Igor Cavellera are the best to me.

Watch any video of Ulrich playing stuff like Whiplash or Blackened (or the bass drum part in One) and compare to Lombardo playing anything and it becomes quite obvious who can play the drums and who doesn't... I mean seriously, have you guys not seen Metallica play live? Watching Ulrich play is like watching a car wreck in slow motion.
I would say it's a pretty accurate statement. I can listen to just about any of those albums and not skip a song, save for a few. As far as "uneven," AJFA... is one of my all-time favorite albums, in any category, and I have hundreds of albums, if not close to a thousand.
I can still remember the first time I played that album and exactly where I was. Such a good album. People always rip the mixdown on that album but I love that disc.

I think the whole group has several problems.
1. Hetfield is not an actual singer. His barking style is a joke.
2. Lars Ulrich is not much of a drummer... and he thinks he does not have to bend his knees to take a dump
3. Hammett is pretty much just a wanker with his solos

I love AJFA as well and can also remember where I was that moment..
My fave Metallica album after Puppets. But I do have to say that AJFA, despite the fact that I've no problem with the mix, is not even close to top 500 of my 4000+ record collection. Too many average tracks for that and some of them are way too long considering the contents. Puppets on the other hand is "a killer with no fillers" and makes it easily into my top 100 - if not top 50. Even Lars handles his parts quite well there.I love AJFA as well and can also remember where I was that moment..

Up until this time, they were more or less against becoming mainstream, at least from what I recall reading way back when. I remember when they wouldn't even wear a t-shirt with a magazine logo on it.
Breakthrough album = most commercially successful album.
I continued to listen to them after Metallica, but didn't really get into anything new they were doing until Death Magnetic.
IMO, comparisons between Metallica and Slayer (at least in terms of popularity) shouldn't be made, as one band went commercial (don't mean to say that this is a bad thing) while the other, although having seen spikes in popularity here and there has never enjoyed anywhere near the same level of commercial success.

They are the 2nd most important Metal band (after Sabbath) and re-invented the genre as we know it regardless of what you think of their latter albums.
Oh btw, Death Magnetic was a massive record.
